First of all I subscribe to multiple political magazines that I read full knowing that the authors have biased opinions. I look for the facts and analyze them. I am curious as to why all the negative rhetoric surrounds John McCain. I have been on the fence as to who I want to vote for now for several months. I look deep and hard to find the facts about the negatives behind each candidate.
McCain (Negatives): He is filthy rich and owns seven houses making it hard for the average American to relate to this type of living. He left his wife years ago for a women heir to a beer distributer worth millions that is half his age. He is of the Republican party that has screwd this country for eight years! Other than this, these are the only negatives that I find.
(Positives): He is a very experienced politicion and war vet for over 30 years. I think this proves he is in the loop and knows how a Super power with big government works. He has passed multiple bills of legislation and has a lot of foriegn policy experience. He has opposed Bush in many issues over the years and is a almost Democrat-Republican. This dispelling the thought that he is going to run the country in the same manner.
Obama (Negatives): He changes his mind very often. He said, after the muslim rumors that he would never denounce his christian church. Then a month later, denounced his church (Jeremiah Wright incident). He has said he is against offshore drilling and then said, Well maybe a little will be okay. He has never detailed is master plan to fix the economy that he says he can do. He says he will raise taxes on corporate businesses, that will only make them cut jobs to keep tthe same budget. He says he will sit and talk to Iran, who openly says they hate the western ideology. He claims that he will offer tax cuts to small businesses, did he think of sole proprieters that file personal along with most small businesses. This does not help them and will actually raise there tax that is personal and business. He has two years as a Senator and he never authored a single piece of legislation that got passed. He has been campaigning for the presidency for 75% of his term in the Senate. He got funding for his Senatorial race by known convicted felons (one who bombed the capital building). What the hell is going on? Why is this man full of negatives even given the privalidge to run for the greatest office of all. Keep in mind that I am a Democrat and have never voted for a Republican.
(Positives): One of the greatest orators if have ever listened to in my life. He speaks of taking the country in a positive way. He is of a different race than all other incumbents before him. This is important as the country grows more diverse and that is what this country was founded on. He graduated from the most prestigues law schools in the country (Harvard). He is a political phenomenon for rising quicker than any other candidate to ever run. He has ran his campaign as a business and this has never been done before. The media reflects the negative aspects about him and we know how much the media likes drama and embarrassment.
These are things to think about when thinking of who you will vote for in this upcoming election. I think to many people judge based on looks and personal charism. A shy man by the name of Archemedies revelutionized the realm of abstract thinking before any great American. Many men can lead. Those leaders were desisive and did not teeter on the fence taking into account of what his peers would think. I see a leader and a follower here. Do you? Or is this just and abscure opinion that will again be overshadowed by the facts. Leaders like FDR didn't change his mind when people said that the New Deal was not going to pull us out of the great depression and he stuck to it. THen look what happened.

He attended a christian church for many years, I'm not sure He's muslim. He says he's not anyway. I do on the other hand agree with you about how he denounces he is half white. Half of his DNA came from his white mother regardless of how "Black he looks". I am half white and the other half of me are equal parts black and hispanic. To clarify thats 50% white 25% black 25% hispanic. I don't denounce any part of my genetic makeup because it's wrong. People always ask me about my race and I tell them everything, it would be wrong to say I'm black when that's only part of the story. We need to move past the "one-drop rule". That rule forces people to denounce half of their family sometimes almost ALL their family. I also have to add that African-Americans would freak if he mentioned his white heritage too much. To many people, if you are half white half black--you are just black. Take Halle Berry, she is half white and doesn't recognize she's biracial. If she were sooo black her baby who is 25% black would look a lot different.

You're absolutely right that we need to move past the "one drop rule", but it's so deeply entreched that it's going to be difficult. It will take people like you recognizing ALL of their heritage, and insisting that others do, and too many people don't. I applaud your efforts.

I appreciate that you look for actual facts when reading about the candidates, I just take issue with a couple of things you said about each candidate -
McCain: 1) Being rich isn't in and of itself a negative. Admittedly, it does make it hard for people to relate to him, and possibly vice versa 2) His wife isn't half his age. She's about 19 years younger than he is, and that is neither here nor there. The fact that he left his first wife was between the 2 of them, and is nobody's business, just as the Clinton affair was between him and his wife, and was nobody's business.
Obama: 1) Hasn't denounced his Christianity, only a particular church, for which I applaud him, because of the racist and hateful crap being spewed from the mouth of the pastor there. I believe when he said he wouldn't denounce his Christian church, he was referring to his Christian faith, not a particular church. That's just my impression. 2) He is a great speaker...but so what?
As for the first commentor...I won't even bother.

Thank you for this blog. I think more people should have your outlook on how they decide to vote. It shouldn't be about race or gender. It should be about what they stand for and how they can better our country.
I do struggle with who I will vote for. To be honest, I'm not too impressed with either of them. Like you said Obama is a wonderful public speaker with impressive education but does he have the experience and knowledge needed to be our next president? And McCain seems to have the experience and knowledge but I don't think his morals and ethics are very comparable with mine. He owns 7 houses while U.S. citizens sleep on the street. How ridiculous!
I also wanted to comment on a rumor I heard about McCain. Hopefully somebody can clarify this for me. McCain was a prisoner of war in Vietnam. He was rescued and supposedly knew about other U.S. POW's in Vietnam but did nothing to help save them. They ended up being executed. I think McCain was in an important position...such as a leader of defense or something if I'm not mistaken. Well...I hope someone has some insight for me on this topic.

To answer the question "I am curious as to why all the negative rhetoric surrounds John McCain."
For me, at least (I certainly don't speak for anyone else!) I find John McCain to be just like Bush. To me, it seems like some republican who is REALLY in power said, "Okay, which puppet can we use now?" I don't feel that McCain is genuine. He is just as baffled-looking as our current puppet (oops, president) and I'm tired of thinking my president is an idiot!! I am tired of the rest of the world's slowly sinking opinion of Americans BECAUSE of our president and current "nose in everybody's business" administration. I don't believe McCain cares about the fact that I have to decide between groceries or the electric bill this paycheck because I'm that much more broke now than I was 8 years ago. He can't possibly understand what that feels like. I feel all he cares about is the war(s) and I AM TIRED OF "FIGHTING." I think that voting Republican would be like shooting myself in the foot: of absolutely NO benefit to anyone.
